In a significant development, Education Minister Priya Manickchand announced that parents of students who participated in this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) have received a total refund of $140 million. This information was shared during the inauguration of the new Brickdam Secondary School.
Minister Manickchand addressed a gathering of parents, students, and stakeholders, confirming that the refunds represent amounts reimbursed in the Georgetown district for the CXC fees paid by families. In April, President Ali pledged that the government would absorb costs for at least eight subjects in these examinations.
Expressing gratitude, parents across the nation have welcomed this financial relief as a significant step in easing their educational expenses. The year 2024 also revealed promising results for Guyanese students in the CXC CSEC exams, as the country secured impressive rankings, placing in the top ten candidates for 13 subjects.
Notably, the number of students achieving outstanding results has soared, with more candidates obtaining multiple Grade 1s, showcasing a notable rise in academic excellence. Since 2020, the Ministry of Education has been dedicated to ensuring equitable access to quality education, introducing initiatives like the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant program and providing free textbooks to support families and enhance their educational journeys.
