The Chief Elections Officer, Vishnu Persaud, announced that results from the September 1 general and regional elections should be available by the evening of September 2, assuming there are no significant delays or calls for recounts. An official announcement of the results is slated for the following day.
During a media briefing post-Nomination Day at the Umana Yana, Persaud explained that once the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) completes district-level declarations by the evening of September 2, the winners will be identifiable. The official results will then be disclosed the day after.
Seven political parties, including the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), the Alliance for Change (AFC), and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), are vying for seats in the elections. GECOM has confirmed that its staff is well-trained and ready for the electoral process. Additionally, several international observers have arrived in Guyana to monitor the elections.
Persaud emphasized that security protocols are in place to ensure a transparent vote tabulation process. Furthermore, the lists of contesting parties will be publicly displayed outside GECOM’s office, and results will be accessible via the GECOM website as soon as the Statement of Polls (SOPs) are processed, allowing citizens to track results independently.
He warned that if a recount is necessary, the announcement of the results would be postponed, though they aim for a national declaration by the second day after the elections.
