The Guyanese government has dismissed the opposition’s demands for a forensic audit of electoral data and fresh elections as a ‘dangerous game’ that threatens the nation’s stability and development.
‘It’s absolutely ridiculous,’ said President Dr. Irfaan Ali, in response to the actions taken by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
The opposition had initially lost the election but demanded a recount, which resulted in less votes for APNU. The President emphasized that the tactics were an attempt to ‘delay the inevitable’ and show the public who is for them and who is not.
‘The life of this country is important,’ said President Ali. ‘If people continue to play with the life of this country, who plays with the life of the citizens, we have to take action.’
The results of the elections showed a resounding victory for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), and a second term for President Dr. Irfaan Ali.
International observer groups had already verified the credibility of the elections, with Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo stating that the democratic process had been conducted transparently and fairly.
