The trial concerning the March 2020 General and Regional Elections will resume on July 28, 2025, after a break following the cross-examination of two witnesses.
The proceedings, overseen by Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, featured local activist Jonathan Yearwood continuing his testimony. The court heard several voice recordings from the GECOM Command Center at Ashmins Building, which Yearwood used to identify several individuals, including former Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo, former GECOM worker Denise Babb-Cummings, and GECOM Chair, retired Justice Claudette Singh. Although Yearwood successfully recognized some voices, he struggled with others.
Yearwood is expected back on the stand for further cross-examination. Although this was scheduled for Friday, delays from defense attorney Eusi Anderson postponed this part of the proceedings.
Additionally, Kit Nascimento, who monitored the elections for the Private Sector Commission, participated virtually, focusing on his observations and interactions. He underscored his commitment to ensuring a fair electoral process, noting his extensive experience in such roles. Importantly, he clarified that he never interacted with Mingo during the tabulation process and reported only to the Chairman of the Private Sector Commission.
Nine defendants are implicated in a conspiracy to adjust the election results to favor the APNU+AFC, preventing the PPP from claiming victory. This controversy contributed to the prolonged delay in results, with PPP candidate Irfaan Ali finally inaugurated on August 2, 2020.
