Acclaimed Chinese photographer Ma Chunlin has made history by successfully filming the ascent of Mount Qomolangma, better known as Mount Everest, from its northern face in an entirely continuous shot.
The task was daunting: every detail had to align perfectly, or he’d have to wait another year for another chance. Ma navigated a tight climbing window of only a few weeks, moving from Everest Base Camp to the Advanced Base Camp located at 6,500 meters. He braved severe weather conditions, camping in extreme colds, while he awaited the ideal blend of clear skies, gentle winds, and perfect synchronization with the climbers. The filming commenced at sunrise, executed with precise timing and flawless camera movements to capture the climbers’ route without any distractions.
Ma spent five years pursuing this extraordinary vision, initially creating a segmented documentary of the mountain’s ascent from the Chinese side. However, his enduring aspiration was to document the entire journey in one seamless shot, overcoming numerous challenges along the way.
