The Government of Guyana is making significant strides in enhancing education, job creation, and skills training, recently inaugurating a new skills development and certification center in Region Six, costing $55.4 million. This facility joins several others launched by the government nationwide.
Since President Irfaan Ali took office in August 2020, the administration has dedicated itself to educational advancement, training over 82,000 individuals and generating 60,000 jobs. For 2025, an additional $175 billion has been earmarked in the budget to further elevate educational quality for all Guyanese.
The Board of Industrial Training (BIT) is actively building facilities to boost community-based technical and vocational education and training (TVET) initiatives, with a new $44.8 million center opened this February in Region Six.
During the commissioning event, Senior Minister Dr. Ashni Singh acknowledged Guyana’s status as the fastest-growing economy globally, citing increased investments across various sectors and a record number of jobs. He echoed President Ali’s sentiment of living in an era of opportunities, highlighting that education is now available free from nursery to university, alongside free vocational training.
Minister Singh encouraged attendees to pursue entrepreneurship alongside traditional employment, noting opportunities in areas like online advertising, accelerated by the government’s telecommunications liberalization since 2020. Furthermore, he emphasized that the current economic growth is paving the way for ample employment and training that aligns with the evolving demands of the economy.
Additionally, Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton reflected on the achievements of BIT in training thousands of individuals since 2020, contrasting the previous administration’s training figure of 6,000 over five years.
