In a recent graduation ceremony, Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo encouraged the latest graduates of the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) to harness the wealth of opportunities available to them, leveraging their new skills and certifications for future advancement.
Addressing close to 2,000 graduates, Jagdeo expressed pride in the successful outcomes of the academy, noting that the number of scholarships awarded has significantly exceeded initial targets set by the government.
Jagdeo highlighted the transformation and diversification of Guyana’s economy, citing that numerous sectors are evolving, particularly the oil and gas industry. He emphasized that Local Content Legislation has been enacted to ensure that Guyanese individuals reap substantial benefits from these sectors.
With over 1,000 local companies gaining more than US$700 million in procurement opportunities, he urged graduates to prepare for an influx of opportunities as the law expands into other areas. He also pointed to the environment sector, where the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) focuses on sustainability and will support resilience-building projects for communities.
As thousands of acres of land are designated for small farmers and zero-interest financing becomes available for small businesses, Jagdeo encouraged graduates to explore prospects beyond government employment and consider forming locally owned companies.
In a further address, Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton advised graduates to align their career choices with the evolving economic demands, stressing the importance of a strong work ethic alongside academic success.
