On Thursday, the Ministry of Education launched a comprehensive literacy program aimed at bridging education gaps across Guyana. The initiative seeks to enhance reading and writing skills among young learners, ensuring every child can read by Grade Four.
Key to this program’s success is the training of teachers and literary officers in various regions, with the first phase commencing on September 8th. This renewed focus on literacy began in 2023, following a meeting between Minister Priya Manickchand and her team, who identified challenges and potential solutions.
The program is built upon research-driven principles, incorporating culturally relevant resources and community engagement to address the needs of learners from nursery to secondary school. A dedicated website and blog have also been established to provide improved access to resources.
Minister Manickchand emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating it’s ‘not merely an education program, but a national promise.’ She highlighted the need for accountability in teaching practices, classroom management improvements, and resource distribution. The ultimate goal is to create a more equitable education system where every child receives high-quality instruction.
This nationwide effort aims to benefit children of all ages and backgrounds, with the Minister expressing confidence that Guyana’s literacy program will be emulated by neighboring Caribbean nations.
