On Tuesday, First Lady Mrs. Arya Ali addressed a UN conference, emphasizing Guyana’s commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities. Speaking at the 18th session of the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, she discussed the crucial legislative frameworks in place to safeguard the rights of this community.
Mrs. Ali highlighted the Prevention of Discrimination Act and the Persons with Disabilities Act, which serve as the legal groundwork for preventing discrimination in employment, ensuring access to free education and healthcare, and fostering participation in cultural and recreational activities. The National Commission on Disability was also mentioned, which works to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities in Guyana.
Additionally, the First Lady revealed government initiatives aimed at providing tangible support, such as lifelong public assistance, employment opportunities, and access to essential assistive devices. Among these initiatives is the recently inaugurated Center for Equity, Opportunity, and Innovation, which offers vocational training and business development for individuals with disabilities.
She also noted the collaboration between institutions like the Mahaica Learning Lab and the Open Doors Vocational Centre, providing free skills training, and highlighted the importance of the Regional Disability Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, which facilitates early diagnoses for children with disabilities.
