Ten young women from the hinterland regions of Guyana have been awarded scholarships for maritime training, a groundbreaking initiative led by First Lady Mrs. Arya Ali. This US$120,000 program, developed in partnership with Tidewater Inc., aims to empower women in the traditionally male-dominated maritime industry.
The three-year initiative will enable the recipients to complete Cadet Certificate training, preparing them as either officers-in-charge of navigational watch or engineering watch, with the final year spent aboard a seagoing vessel.
During a recent ceremony at State House, Mrs. Ali highlighted the significance of these scholarships as a means to foster gender equality within the maritime sector. “This program ensures access to specialized training for women from our hinterland regions, including our indigenous women,” she stated.
She also emphasized the potential impact that these young women could have in addressing the industry’s current labor shortages, calling them “trailblazers” poised to transform the field. “This isn’t merely a scholarship; it’s a commitment to your capabilities and leadership potential,” she reassured the scholarship recipients.
Additionally, through a shorter program, the First Lady’s Office, in collaboration with the Atlantic Alliance Maritime and Offshore training institute, has already provided Basic Safety training and Ship Security awareness training to 60 women across various regions. A further 40 women are set to receive this training soon.
Quintin Kneen, President and Director of Tidewater Inc., praised the recipients for their ambition and resilience, reinforcing that education and access must include women in decision-making roles. Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the importance of bridging career gaps for women in underserved areas.
