The nationwide physical education programme has been launched in Guyana, with Education Minister Sonia Parag joining students in Georgetown. The initiative aims to promote wellness in schools, and is being implemented with the support of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
Minister Parag emphasized that the programme is part of the government’s vision to nurture well-rounded citizens, who possess a range of skills beyond academics.
The programme will see all secondary schools dedicate Friday afternoons to physical activity, with a variety of exercises and recreational activities such as football, cricket, dance, warm-up drills, obstacle courses, and more.
The collaboration between the government and GDF is aimed at providing structure and nationwide uniformity, rather than imposing military training. The physical education teachers and coaches will determine the activities, while the GDF provides support with technical aspects of physical training.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali has also announced that university education will be made free, which has already doubled applications at the University. Additionally, the Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on bullying and violence in schools.
