According to Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), the youth of Guyana play a crucial role in the country’s development strategy. The government is fully committed to fostering this demographic through a youth policy designed to include them in the nation’s vision for a prosperous future.
During a press conference at Freedom House in Georgetown, Dr. Jagdeo addressed the misleading attempts by the opposition to appear supportive of young people during their tenure from 2015 to 2020. He emphasized that the current administration prioritizes youth engagement, as reflected in President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s leadership approach.
Dr. Jagdeo highlighted the impressive growth of the PPP’s youth organization, the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), which now boasts 15,000 members, far surpassing its initial goal of 5,000. This recruitment effort spans all regions and races in Guyana.
In contrast to other political entities that restrict their youth policies to cultural and sporting initiatives, the PPP’s commitment extends to education, healthcare, housing, job opportunities, and security, providing a holistic approach to youth empowerment.
Dr. Jagdeo expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm demonstrated by young supporters from various backgrounds, reinforcing the government’s resolve to integrate youth into every aspect of Guyana’s development.
