Deputy Chief Election Officer (CEO) Aneal Giddings has assured the public that Guyana’s forthcoming general and regional elections, set for September 1, 2025, will be held in a “free, transparent and credible” manner. This pledge comes as the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) ramps up its preparations ahead of Nomination Day on July 14, 2025.
During a recent meeting involving representatives from 28 political parties, Giddings highlighted that the focus was on education and preparation, addressing ongoing concerns about procedural clarity, particularly from smaller parties. He aims to provide clear guidelines on the technical requirements for contesting the elections.
The meeting also touched upon the “Joinder of Lists” concept, where smaller parties can consolidate their electoral influence. Giddings acknowledged that this issue would be revisited in the Commission’s next meeting based on the concerns voiced by attendees, including Dr. Mark Defrance from ANUG, regarding past joinder arrangements.
Furthermore, Giddings committed to improving communication and transparency, recognizing that many parties faced challenges accessing information from GECOM. He also reassured that preparations are on schedule, with the pre-election checklist actively being worked on, symbol submissions opened, and the purging of deceased individuals from the voters’ list ongoing.
In conclusion, Giddings expressed confidence in delivering a well-organized electoral process, affirming that they are on course for a successful election ahead.
