The Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University has formally received 12 historical artefacts, previously held by a German family for over 100 years. The artefacts, which include crowns, shields, and paintings, were handed over during a ceremony attended by the Tourism Minister.
These artefacts hold great cultural significance in Ethiopia and will soon be made available to the public for research and academic study. The return of these artefacts marks an important step in safeguarding Ethiopia’s rich heritage.
The move is part of a growing trend of countries seeking to reclaim their cultural treasures, which were often plundered during colonial rule. Germany has taken steps towards addressing its own ‘dark colonial history’ by returning items such as the Benin Bronzes to Nigeria.
The artefacts have been meticulously preserved and will now be shared with the public, allowing Ethiopians to connect with their cultural heritage on a deeper level.
