The European Union is scrutinizing several adult websites, including Pornhub, Stripchat, XVideos, and XNXX, in a probe concerning potential violations of its online content regulations.
The European Commission has highlighted that these platforms may lack essential measures to protect children, particularly regarding effective age verification systems meant to restrict minors from accessing adult material.
Stating that online platforms should prioritize the rights and welfare of children in their operations, the Commission noted that the current age verification methods, such as simple pop-ups asking users if they are over 18, are deemed insufficient.
Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo, acknowledged the ongoing investigation and expressed its commitment to safeguarding minors online, while also advocating for comprehensive laws to protect users globally.
Initial findings from the Commission reveal that the investigated platforms have not implemented adequate strategies for ensuring the safety and well-being of underage users. This scrutiny comes as part of a broader global movement demanding stricter regulations for online pornography services.
As the most visited adult website globally, Pornhub has faced increasing pressure to comply with age verification demands, recently restricting access in several US states that require proof of age. Moving forward, platforms identified as ‘very large online platforms’ under the Digital Services Act will encounter more stringent regulations, with the possibility of facing fines if found in violation.
The Commission emphasizes its commitment to ensuring minors’ safe navigation online, reinforcing the importance of coordinating with member states to tackle risks involving smaller adult sites as well.
