Specialized diggers and equipment are now actively being utilized in the search for Madeleine McCann, nearly 18 years after her mysterious disappearance from a Portugal resort.
Authorities began their operation on Wednesday, using hedge trimmers to clear dense vegetation as they conduct a thorough search of the area surrounding abandoned structures and wells. This renewed search effort, spanning a 21 sq km (8 sq miles) site, will continue through Friday and focuses on the vicinity of Madeleine’s last known whereabouts and a location linked to suspected German national Christian Brückner.
Madeleine famously vanished on May 3, 2007, at the age of three while vacationing with her family, prompting an extensive investigation that gained international attention. Today’s search was marked by the appearance of several German-registered vehicles, including two with officers in disguise, as the police methodology remains discreet.
Brückner, currently imprisoned in Germany for separate crimes, has been identified as the lead suspect since 2020. Although he is due for release this September, legal complications may delay this until 2026, raising concerns among investigators regarding the retention of critical evidence.
The search area, located near Praia da Luz, is noted for its desolate surroundings, including abandoned properties littered with debris. The investigation has previously seen significant activity, with the last major search occurring two years ago, focused around a nearby reservoir.
Authorities have not disclosed whether this latest search is based on new evidence, but the ongoing investigation underscores the persistent efforts to resolve Madeleine’s case, as British police remain actively engaged alongside their German counterparts.
