A tragic incident on Saturday night in Bareroot, East Coast Demerara (ECD), left a 23‑year‑old taxi driver and a 25‑year‑old labourer dead after a heated confrontation at a local residence. Police in Regional Division 4 ‘C’ report that Joshua James and Jonathan Hassan were involved in a melee that turned violent around 08:40 hrs.
Both men suffered multiple stab wounds. James was seen fleeing the scene and was found on the roadside near a parked car, where he collapsed and was taken to Enmore Regional Hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival. Hassan departed the residence and was later discovered motionless on a bench near a barber shop, with severe injuries, and was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators found bloodstains and other evidence at both locations, and a motorcycle linked to the incident was seized. The bodies are currently at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary awaiting post‑mortem examinations.
In unrelated news, masked gunmen targeted the G. Sudhai and Son supermarket in Rose Hall Town that evening, while a fish vendor in River View, West, was robbed of jewellery and cash on Thursday. Police also arrested five men for a simple larceny at a supermarket earlier in the week.
These events underscore a concerning surge in violent incidents across the region, prompting authorities to intensify their investigation efforts.
