The FBI is now part of the search for those responsible for the tragic shooting of a congressional intern in Washington, D.C. Twenty-one-year-old Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was shot late on June 30 and succumbed to his injuries on July 1. The incident occurred on the 1200 block of 7th Street, Northwest, where a group of suspects exited a vehicle and indiscriminately opened fire on a crowd, which Tarpinian-Jachym was part of. Police believe he was not the intended target of the shooting.
In a statement, an FBI spokesperson confirmed their cooperation with the Metropolitan Police Department as they continue to investigate the incident. No suspects have yet been apprehended. Ted Williams, a former homicide detective, noted the FBI’s involvement likely stems from the fact that Tarpinian-Jachym was a congressional aide, which raises the stakes in such cases. He lamented the sad reality that gun violence has unfortunately become commonplace in D.C.
Tarpinian-Jachym, who interned for Rep. Ron Estes, was set to return for his senior year, pursuing a degree in finance with a minor in political science. His family expressed their devastation, remembering him as a kind and promising young man passionate about the outdoors and public service. A touching tribute from Rep. Estes highlighted Tarpinian-Jachym’s cheerful demeanor and dedication to making the world a better place.
