The First Lady of Guyana, Arya Ali, has broadened her Menstrual Hygiene Initiative to include the isolated Region Eight, aiming to address period poverty and eliminate the stigma surrounding menstruation.
During her recent visit to the region, Mrs. Ali inaugurated the program at Kato Secondary School, where she distributed free sanitary pads and shared vital information on menstrual hygiene. Launched initially in 2021, the initiative seeks to empower girls by providing essential support and fostering body positivity.
“The Menstrual Hygiene Initiative is all about dispelling myths surrounding menstruation and directly addressing the issue by ensuring secondary school girls across Guyana have access to free sanitary products,” remarked Mrs. Ali.
She noted that menstruation is a natural aspect of health and womanhood that should not hinder any girl. “Every girl deserves a sense of cleanliness, safety, and confidence every day,” she stated.
Reflecting on her own past, the First Lady highlighted the importance of open conversations on menstruation, aiming to counter the shame often associated with it. “Missing school because of periods affects girls’ education significantly,” she added.
Chinese Ambassador Yang Yang commended the initiative for its focus on underprivileged communities like Kato, underscoring its role in supporting girls’ education and social participation. The initiative continues to make an impact, having assisted over 32,000 schoolgirls in Guyana, ensuring they can concentrate on their education without the burden of menstrual costs.
