A 79-year-old man from Florida was discovered deceased on Friday after a prolonged search in the rugged terrain of Mount Washington, New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department confirmed the unfortunate news, stating that William Davis was missing for three days following his hike.
Davis traveled to the summit via the Mount Washington Cog Railway on Wednesday. He was last seen near the visitor center after capturing a photo with his wife. Shortly after, he ventured away from her towards the trails. During a brief phone call with a park employee, he indicated he was off the trail but lost contact when his phone battery died.
Search efforts commenced the same evening and included helicopters, drones, and numerous ground teams, but were hampered by poor weather conditions including fog and high winds. As searches progressed, no signs of Davis were found.
By Friday morning, teams concentrated on the eastern and southern slopes, where worsened weather posed additional challenges. Unfortunately, at around 11 a.m., volunteers discovered his body approximately 400 feet off the Lion Head Trail, suggesting he may have experienced a serious fall.
A nearby Black Hawk helicopter crew aided in the recovery due to a tactical pause in their training mission. An autopsy is forthcoming to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding Davis’s death.
