Kurt Da Silva, the former Legal Counsel for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), has initiated a legal case against GECOM and Chief Election Officer Vishnu Persaud, alleging that two press statements made about him contain false and defamatory claims.
According to court documents reviewed by News Source, one of the statements was released on April 9, 2025, regarding the non-renewal of Da Silva’s employment contract, while the other was issued on March 20, 2025, by Persaud. Da Silva is seeking formal retractions and apologies from both GECOM and the CEO.
With over seven years of legal experience, including a prior role at the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Da Silva claims that the statements imply he acted against the Commission’s orders in a legal case, leading to misleading interpretations regarding upcoming elections. GECOM’s public communications suggested that Da Silva’s actions might create confusion among voters and stakeholders.
He contends that the allegations have severely tarnished his professional reputation, portraying him as untrustworthy and deceitful. Da Silva asserts that his submissions were consistent with an affidavit by the CEO and had been previously shared with GECOM’s Chairman, Claudette Singh, who expressed agreement. Consequently, he argues that the released statements are entirely unfounded.
