Prominent Indigenous figure and ex-Minister of Indigenous Peoplesā Affairs, Sydney Allicock, has openly endorsed President Irfaan Ali and the Peopleās Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) for a second term.
Allicock, a member of the Guyana Action Party (GAP), which advocates for Indigenous rights, expressed disappointment with the current state of the opposition, emphasizing the PPPās dedication to Indigenous advancement as pivotal to his support. In an interview with News Room, he discussed his experiences within the APNU+AFC coalition, highlighting a growing sense of neglect for smaller parties like GAP.
“As a member of a smaller coalition party, our voices seemed sidelined. Initially, we had inclusivity with former President Granger, but that has since diminished,” he noted. Reflections on regrouping efforts within the opposition left him unconvinced, citing miscoordination and a lack of collective vision among the major parties involved.
With the September elections approaching, Allicock has consulted widely within hinterland communities and believes President Ali merits another term. “If given a chance, we could achieve much more together through unity, sensible dialogue, and cooperative decisions,ā he stated.
He commended the governmentās initiatives aimed at enhancing Indigenous development and urged communities to actively participate rather than remain complacent. Allicock recognized that while others may not publicly share his views, they are reconsidering their positions regarding the upcoming elections. He concluded with a reminder of Guyana’s potential, urging voters to choose wisely in the forthcoming polls.
