A Creative Journey in Jewellery Making
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, disrupting lives and industries, Kim Boodhan found herself at a pivotal moment. Recently transitioned from her role as a food and beverage supervisor and balancing motherhood with a newborn, Kim stumbled upon a TikTok video that inspired her passion for jewellery design.
Thus, Marie and Me was born at her home on William Street, Kitty, Georgetown—a handcrafted jewellery label that quickly blossomed into more than a pastime. Armed only with determination and YouTube tutorials, she started crafting pieces that embodied her identity and conveyed meaningful stories.
While Kim reveled in her artistic journey, she faced the typical struggles of a new entrepreneur—pricing, sourcing materials, and distinguishing her brand. With support from her husband, who stepped in as her business coach, she navigated these challenges while keeping sight of her vision: a brand rooted in creativity, culture, and connection.
Her designs reflect her Guyanese heritage, instilling pride and storytelling through each item. Notably, her standout earrings were inspired by a South African artist’s emotive work, delivered with an energetic essence.
As her brand gained traction, Kim launched a unique earring bar at pop-up markets, allowing customers to create personalised pieces on-site, enriching their experience beyond mere purchases. She aims to expand this concept into a full-time creative studio for local artisans.
Despite facing community support challenges, Kim encourages fellow creatives to embrace collaboration and seize opportunities, sharing credit with notable brands she’s worked with, like Shasha Designs and Matapee Design, particularly after her participation in the Origins Fashion Festival.
