After recently announcing a projected completion date for the Gas-to-Energy initiative in the first quarter of 2026, the Government has now revised this timeline, prompting further delays.
During a session with the National Assembly’s Committee of Supply, Prime Minister Mark Phillips revealed that the project is now expected to conclude by the end of the second quarter of 2026, following consultations with Permanent Secretary Alfred King and Guyana Power and Light Company Head, Kesh Nandlall.
This update arose during a discussion with Opposition MP David Patterson regarding the additional funds needed for the electricity program as part of a supplementary budget. The Prime Minister stated that he did not have the specific percentage of work completed but promised to provide that information later.
The Government has requested and received an additional $28.7 billion to support this initiative, building on the $88 billion previously allocated to the energy sector and related projects just three months ago.
Prime Minister Phillips pointed out that multiple connections still need to be established to integrate various regions into the gas-to-energy system being developed at Wales on the West Bank of Demerara.
This project, which has faced multiple deferrals—from originally expecting completion by mid-2025 to a series of revised dates—promises to double the country’s electricity generation capacity and potentially lower costs for consumers by 50 percent upon completion.
