In a significant advancement for Guyana’s air defense system, President Dr. Irfaan Ali officially inaugurated the Tecnam P2012 aircraft at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) hangar located at Eugene F. Correia Airport in Ogle on Thursday. This $711 million investment is designed to establish the GDF as a leading regional first responder, focusing on rapid deployment, surveillance, and humanitarian support.
During his address to military officials, President Ali emphasized that the introduction of this aircraft is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at repositioning the military’s role within the region. He highlighted the growing imperative of the GDF to respond adeptly to natural disasters across the Caribbean, reflecting on the necessity for a modernized defense approach that integrates technology and seeks to enhance national sovereignty and security.
The President revealed that investments in the military have seen a considerable increase, with the GDF’s budget swelling from $13.9 billion in 2019 to $50.4 billion in the current year. This financial boost underscores a shift towards modernization from mere maintenance, with funds allocated to new aircraft, helicopters, and sea vessels.
Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Defence Staff, noted that over $9 billion has been channeled into modernizing the air corps, confirming a commitment to fostering a resilient military force that can address national and security challenges more effectively. The Tecnam P2012 will play a crucial role in supporting these operations, particularly in combating transnational crime.
