The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has granted approval for six out of seven political parties to participate in the upcoming General and Regional Elections on September 1, 2025. This decision was made during a special meeting held on Friday, aligning with legal mandates and timelines following Nomination Day.
The parties given the green light include: A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Alliance for Change (AFC), Assembly of Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), People’s Progressive Party / Civic (PPP/C), and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN). The Horizon & Star Party was the only party not approved.
Of the approved parties, only APNU, AFC, PPP/C, and WIN submitted candidate lists for all ten electoral districts in the Regional Elections. In contrast, ALP will participate in districts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10, while FGM will contest in districts 1 through 6 and 10.
Initially, seven parties submitted candidate lists on Nomination Day, but only six complied with the necessary legal standards. The Chief Elections Officer (CEO) identified issues in submissions by July 15, providing parties a two-day window to amend their applications. The corrected lists were received and approved on July 18.
Political parties are still able to notify the CEO of any joint list arrangements until July 21, with the finalized candidate list to be published by July 23, 2025. This decision paves the way for active campaigning by the six authorized parties.
