The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued a statement addressing recent claims that its Chair acted independently in recommending a date for the upcoming General and Regional Elections. Contrary to assertions made in a May 27, 2025, press conference, GECOM maintains that the Chair’s decision was based on advice from Chief Election Officer (CEO), not on unilateral judgment.
President Irfaan Ali contacted the Chair on May 23, 2025, inquiring about the possibility of holding elections within three months. The Chair requested permission to consult the CEO before responding. Upon discussion, the CEO indicated that a draft work plan was already in place to ensure readiness for elections, potentially scheduled for August 25, 2025, if necessary.
The work plan outlined was not final; it served merely as a timeline of activities leading up to the elections, based on initial discussions and was never meant to be the definitive plan for the actual voting process. The CEO also agreed to adjust this schedule according to feedback from commissioners.
Ultimately, the Chair’s recommendation to the President was informed by the constitutional mandate stating elections must occur within three months of parliamentary dissolution, thus dispelling the notion of unilateral action. This clarification aims to ensure the public has the correct understanding of the electoral readiness and decision-making process.
