The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is actively preparing for the forthcoming General and Regional Elections, having approved the appointments of Returning Officers (RO) and Supernumerary Returning Officers (SRO). This update was shared by Sase Gunraj, a commissioner nominated by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), following a meeting held on Tuesday.
In accordance with the amended Representation of the People Act (RoPA), SROs will perform duties akin to those of ROs, overseeing sub-districts situated within Electoral Districts Three, Four, and Six. For vote tabulation purposes, District No. Three is divided into three sub-districts, District No. Four into four, and District No. Six into three.
During the meeting, GECOM’s secretariat committed to establishing protocols for the movement of poll statements from voting locations to their designated recipients, with plans to post updates online. Furthermore, preparations for ROs and SROs were also discussed.
The Commission plans to brief the involved political parties about the progress of their work plan as part of their ongoing meetings leading up to the General and Regional Elections on September 1, 2025. Political parties interested in contesting these elections must submit their candidate lists by July 14, which marks Nomination Day, while applications for party symbols should be in by June 22. A Claims and Objections exercise is also being held from June 16 to June 20 to finalize the Official List of Electors (OLE) for those eligible to register.
GECOM is dedicated to ensuring that these elections are conducted in a fair, free, and transparent manner.
