The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has officially sanctioned the work plan proposed by its Chief Election Officer, aligning with the September 1 election date recently announced by the President.
During today’s meeting, the Commission revisited this work plan. Vincent Alexander, an Elections Commissioner nominated by the opposition, confirmed that the Commission approved the plan and will further investigate the various statutory responsibilities that need attention prior to the elections.
“Yes, the plan has been approved. I’ve been informed that some determinations regarding the statutory timelines will be discussed on Tuesday. Additionally, they acknowledged the issues I raised and agreed to address them then,” Alexander stated.
He emphasized the need for the Elections Commission to resolve several critical matters to ensure that the electoral process is conducted in a transparent and fair manner.
Earlier this week, opposition-nominated Commissioners expressed that they felt sidelined by the President’s abrupt announcement of the September 1 election date, as they had been working towards a later date based on the previous work plan.
In response, GECOM Chairwoman, retired Justice Claudette Singh, indicated that she consulted the Chief Election Officer about the election timeline after receiving a request from the President regarding the Commission’s preparedness to conduct the elections.
