The Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, attributes much of the escalating violence in Guyana to toxic masculinity and calls for swift reforms, starting within educational institutions and family units. He asserts that the root of many societal issues stems from men grappling with insecurities and dysfunctional behaviors, often exacerbated by the belief that they must dominate financially, physically, and sexually.
Benn highlighted the crucial need for conversations directed toward men to dismantle harmful cultural practices. He noted that until men are held accountable for their actions, such as inappropriate behavior on the roads or disrespectful conduct in public spaces, these norms will persist. His statements come as violent crimes continue to plague the nation, often involving male perpetrators and female victims.
Citing recent statistics, Benn emphasized that behavior among men contributes significantly to the crisis. He remarked on the overwhelming number of men incarcerated compared to women and referenced various violent incidents, including the tragic killings of women by former partners and relatives. Examples include the murder of Bibi Fazila Ally by her ex and the violent death of Kenesha Vaughn at the hands of her partner.
In light of this troubling trend, Minister Benn indicated the government’s initiative to enhance public awareness through education in schools and broader outreach via various media platforms, aiming to redefine what masculinity should embody.
