The government is set to eliminate taxes on All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and boat engines for additional uses, as announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Saturday. This initiative aims to address the high transportation costs faced by residents in hinterland areas.
During a public meeting in Region One (Barima-Waini), President Ali expressed awareness of the residents’ challenges regarding transportation expenses. “We hear your concerns. The next five years promise to be transformative,” he assured the community.
The tax exemption will now extend to ATVs intended for travel within hinterland areas, which previously only applied to those used for industries such as mining, forestry, and agriculture. Furthermore, residents will no longer incur taxes on 40-horsepower boat engines designated for transportation use.
In addition to these tax cuts, President Ali indicated plans to invest in measures that will significantly reduce air, river, and land transport costs. The high airfare rates have particularly been a pressing issue for many living in hinterland regions.
