The Education Minister, Priya Manickchand, proudly declared that Guyana has reached unprecedented heights in educational performance, particularly highlighted by the significant results from this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA). During the results ceremony at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, she emphasized, “Guyana has done the best that it has ever done,” with the overall pass rate increasing from 49% to 63%.
Manickchand provided impressive statistics across various subjects, stating that the percentage of students achieving 50% or more in Mathematics rose from 37.9% in 2015 to a remarkable 55.51%. English scores improved from 45.88% to 69.25%, Social Studies from 46.5% to 64.77%, and Science from 44.12% to 63.7%.
These advancements are attributed to targeted investments in the education sector, particularly focused on addressing learning losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The government implemented a consolidated curriculum and various support measures such as a breakfast program for grades three to six, expansion of educational resources in hinterland regions, and rigorous teacher training, with over 9,000 teachers trained to date.
Furthermore, the government has expanded access to top national schools, increasing placements from 586 students in 2020 to over 900 in 2025. Manickchand’s remarks underscore the significant progress made in ensuring a brighter future for Guyana’s children through education.
