The Government of Guyana, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, recently established a landmark agreement with the Dominican Republic aimed at initiating large-scale cocoa and coffee production in Region One. This innovative venture is set to cultivate roughly 200 acres each for coffee and cocoa, aligning with Guyana’s strategy to advance economic diversity, improve rural living standards, and broaden regional commerce.
This agreement emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices and technical collaboration to bolster the development, cultivation, processing, and marketing of these crops. It will facilitate joint research and development initiatives, aiming to add value and enhance trade in the cocoa and coffee sectors.
Upon reaching optimal production, the project is expected to generate around 8,000 tonnes of cocoa, providing nearly 3,000 direct and indirect jobs and economic benefits for the local population. This initiative is part of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s vision for revitalizing agriculture in Region One.
During a recent outreach in Waramuri Village, President Ali underscored the region’s vast agricultural potential and proposed the establishment of a 10,000-acre coffee plantation featuring both Arabica and Liberica varieties. His administration is committed to reestablishing Region One as a leading coffee-producing zone through strategic investments and the distribution of thousands of cocoa plants.
