In a recent statement, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh highlighted the advancement of talks between Guyana and Suriname regarding the Corentyne River Bridge, an integral part of Guyana’s transport infrastructure strategy. During a high-level Jamaican export and investment mission, Dr. Singh emphasized that discussions are ongoing and significant progress has been made. “We are not yet at construction, but we are in an advanced stage of talks with Suriname, especially as they navigate their recent elections,” he noted.
The proposed bridge is expected to enhance connectivity between the two nations, while also fostering regional integration with Brazil. In addition to this project, Dr. Singh updated attendees on the Linden-Lethem Highway, with phase one proceeding smoothly and numerous bridges nearing completion. This highway is projected to create new trade routes between Guyana and Brazil.
Addressing the challenges of operating within a smaller economy, Dr. Singh remarked on the importance of expanding the economic landscape, noting that better transport links would greatly benefit business opportunities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the nation’s transport infrastructure, which will not only boost economic growth but also promote the development of new communities and agricultural areas.
Additionally, improvements to ports and maritime infrastructure are underway to enhance shipping connectivity regionally and globally, underscoring transport infrastructure as a priority for strengthening both local and cross-border links in Guyana.
