The long-awaited Corentyne River Bridge is poised to transform the economic landscape of Guyana and Suriname, fostering stronger ties among South American and Caribbean nations. During a meeting with Suriname’s President, Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, emphasized the bridge’s significance in advancing regional connectivity and people-to-people exchanges.
The US$236 million project, designed to last 100 years, will span approximately 3.1 kilometres and connect Moleson Creek in Guyana to South Drain in Suriname, with a landing point on Long Island in the Corentyne River.
With China Road and Bridge Corporation set to construct the bridge, both governments are committed to close collaboration to resolve remaining legal, technical, and financial matters. Plans are underway to transform Long Island into a vibrant commercial hub and tourist hotspot, featuring significant infrastructural developments.
The envisioned duty-free zone will offer a range of entertainment venues, hotels, recreational parks, shopping malls, farmers’ markets, and more. The two Heads of State reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship and co-operation that exist between Suriname and Guyana, rooted in their shared values and aspirations, cultural ties, and geographic proximity.
With diplomatic relations established on November 25, 1975, both countries are committed to further deepening their bilateral partnership to promote peace, security, and prosperity for the peoples of both nations.
