Guyana and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the environment and addressing climate change through a strengthened partnership. The high-level talks between President Dr Irfaan Ali and UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy focused on biodiversity conservation, climate leadership, and international cooperation.
The two leaders welcomed the UK’s decision to join the Global Biodiversity Alliance, an initiative led by Guyana, and expressed their enthusiasm for collaborative efforts in safeguarding the planet for future generations.
The UK has pledged its support for Guyana’s initiatives in forest conservation, recognizing the country’s vital role in protecting the Guiana Shield and the Amazon Basin. The British government will continue to provide financial and technical assistance to aid climate-resilient projects in Guyana, with a focus on empowering local communities.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of biodiversity in addressing climate change and stated that Britain would prioritize supporting conservation efforts, particularly those that benefit indigenous communities.
