In a bid to combat the scourge of illegal mining in Guyana, the Ministry of Natural Resources has made 44 individuals face justice for their roles in illicit mining activities. This latest move is part of a nationwide crackdown that aims to dismantle all unauthorized mining operations and restore compliance with the country’s mining laws.
The arrests were made across multiple districts, including Bartica and surrounding areas in Region Seven, as well as Mahdia and its environs in Region Eight. The ministry has also seized over 50 pieces of equipment and other related mining materials from unlicensed operations.
Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting the environment, public safety, and the integrity of the sector. He vowed that those who flout the regulations would be caught, prosecuted, and held accountable.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reaffirms its determination to safeguard Guyana’s natural resources and ensure lawful, responsible mining practices in the national interest. Enforcement operations will continue nationwide, supported by sustained monitoring, inspections, and collaboration with regulatory agencies.
