The Government of Guyana is taking steps to improve road safety in the country, with a focus on cracking down on reckless driving. According to Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond, new draft amendments to traffic regulations and road laws have been crafted, with a goal of implementing tougher penalties for new offenses and stricter license suspension measures.
Walrond noted that suspending licenses is currently a complex process, but emphasized the need for improved road safety. The recent rise in road accidents has sparked concerns, with 110 fatalities recorded so far this year.
November has been designated as Road Safety Awareness Month, with initiatives to educate the public, improve enforcement, and integrate more technology to monitor and manage road safety.
A recent two-vehicle collision on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway resulted in the deaths of two passengers, highlighting the need for urgent action. As one official stated,
