Guyana is making significant advancements in food security, with President Irfaan Ali announcing a groundbreaking investment in hydroponics agriculture, the largest of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean. In a recent Facebook update, the President emphasized that this initiative at the Guyana School of Agriculture in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), covering an acre of land, is a testament to the country’s dedication to self-sufficiency in food production.
President Ali attributed Guyana’s achievements in agriculture and food security to strong government investment and innovative policies. He proclaimed the nation as the only fully food self-sufficient country globally, driven by proactive policies and the diligence of local farmers. The government aims to take agricultural success further by integrating into regional and international markets.
The new hydroponics facility will focus on producing high-value crops such as lettuce, bell peppers, and tomatoes. Built with automated systems for optimal growth conditions, this $200 million project is set to generate over 40,000 pounds of lettuce annually while creating jobs for over 200 local residents. President Ali underscored the importance of engaging the youth in agriculture, aiming to make food production appealing to younger generations through such sustainable projects.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy positioning Guyana as a leader in sustainable food systems, paving the way for a self-sufficient and export-capable agricultural future.
