
The Government of Guyana is actively pursuing additional information from the United States regarding recent sanctions imposed on four individuals, including a police officer, over alleged drug trafficking activities. President Dr. Irfaan Ali shared this development with reporters at a Thursday evening event, emphasizing the need for comprehensive data to facilitate local investigations.
Among those affected by the sanctions is Senior Superintendent Himnauth Sawh, who has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard police procedures. President Ali confirmed his discussions with the U.S. ambassador, seeking crucial insights to enable appropriate actions.
In addition to Sawh, U.S. sanctions also target individuals Paul Daby Jr., Mark Cromwell (known as ‘Demon’ or ‘Diamond’), and Randolph Duncan, according to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Guyana has maintained a collaborative stance with the U.S. to combat drug trafficking, focusing on intelligence sharing and other joint security efforts.
As part of enhancing national security, President Ali highlighted ongoing initiatives to upgrade port safety, mentioning investments in advanced scanning technologies and security measures at airports. He reiterated the commitment to work with U.S. authorities on initiatives to deter individuals involved in such activities, underscoring a united front against drug trafficking challenges in the region.
