Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to peace and diplomacy, while also making it clear that any attacks on Guyanese military personnel will not be tolerated.
The President addressed the commissioning parade of the Guyana Defence Force’s Standard Operating Course #56, highlighting the ongoing border controversy with Venezuela. Despite welcoming Venezuelan citizens who have come to Guyana in search of a better life, the country remains committed to defending its sovereignty and territorial space.
President Ali emphasized that Guyana will not compromise on its sovereignty and will defend it with its partners and allies who stand for freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. The President also stated that the country will invest in modern military equipment and rigorous training to ensure the security of its citizens and resources.
The border dispute is currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which has issued provisional measures ordering Venezuela to refrain from altering the status quo. However, Venezuela’s actions continue to violate international law and regional stability.
