Guyana has embarked on its maiden influenza vaccination campaign, symbolizing a significant milestone in fortifying the nation’s healthcare infrastructure. The launch of this program was marked with great fanfare at the Eccles Health Centre, where Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the gravity of the situation.
Dr. Anthony emphasized that influenza is far from being a harmless illness, citing the alarming global statistics: one billion people affected annually, with up to 650,000 fatalities. Through vaccination, Guyana aims to safeguard vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses, as well as frontline health workers.
The newly introduced GC-Flu vaccine is a trivalent influenza vaccine that offers protection against H1N1, H3N2, and Influenza B strains. Dr. Anthony assured the public that the vaccine is safe, with any potential side effects being mild and temporary.
The Ministry of Health is urging all eligible individuals to access GC-Flu at health facilities nationwide, offering it free of charge. This initiative marks a significant commitment to strengthening immunization coverage and protecting the well-being of Guyanese citizens.
