A new chapter for disability inclusion in Guyana began on Wednesday as the National Commission on Disability and the Ministry of Health launched a 5-year plan aimed at expanding opportunities for people with disabilities.
The plan, crafted with input from the UN Children’s Fund and lived experiences of Guyanese with disabilities, tackles various issues affecting the population.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the plan’s timeliness and praised the commission’s work, noting that a national survey helped create an effective strategy.
The plan aims to promote and protect the rights of people with disabilities through policy, inclusivity, adaptability, accessibility, education, employment, housing, and awareness.
Chairperson Ganesh Singh emphasized the importance of collaboration across ministries, NGOs, and stakeholders to implement the plan and make a significant impact.
The 5-year roadmap is set to usher in progress in Guyana’s steps toward building inclusivity and empowering people living with disabilities.
