First Lady Arya Ali has reaffirmed Guyana’s dedication to enhancing the rights of individuals with disabilities through an inclusive strategy that marries international legal frameworks with innovative local initiatives.
While representing Guyana at the Eighth Session of the Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the First Lady emphasized the nation’s adherence to the principles set forth by the United Nations Convention. She described the Convention as “the gold standard” for promoting the rights of disabled individuals, outlining crucial civil, cultural, economic, political, and social rights focused on inclusion, equality, and non-discrimination.
Guyana has established a robust legal foundation, encompassing the Prevention of Discrimination Act and the Persons with Disabilities Act, which collectively outlaw discrimination in various sectors and require equal opportunities for qualified disabled persons, complete with penalties for noncompliance.
The National Commission on Disability plays a key role in safeguarding these rights, supported by Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy that integrates social inclusion with environmental sustainability. The government also extends practical support through free health services, assistive devices, employment prospects, housing aid, and educational access.
Ali highlighted initiatives like the One Guyana Initiative, which equips youths with disabilities with resources for economic participation, and the newly launched Centre for Equity, Opportunity and Innovation that provides vocational training while employing individuals with disabilities.
Additionally, the Regional Disability Diagnostic and Treatment Centre offers essential early intervention services for children with disabilities, while programs like Men on a Mission further demonstrate the government’s commitment to community support.
In her closing remarks, Ali stated, “A society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable. We believe that education, empowerment, and engagement are crucial to realizing the rights of all individuals with disabilities.”
