Almost 16,000 pupils took the 2025 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), with improvements seen across all four subject areas. The results marked a significant milestone in Guyana’s education history, according to Education Minister Priya Manickchand.
The top scorer was Tanasha Mayers from the Academy of Excellence in Region Three, who achieved an impressive 487.88 marks. This year’s NGSA saw improvements in English Language, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics, with notable progress made in the latter subject area.
Key statistics show that over 50% of pupils passed Mathematics for the first time, while the number of pupils who scored full marks increased nearly fourfold compared to last year. Meanwhile, those scoring zero marks continued to dwindle.
The regional distribution of top performers reveals a stark contrast between coastal and hinterland regions. While pupils from the latter region were underrepresented in the top 1%, those from coastal areas dominated the list.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand emphasized her ministry’s efforts to improve and equalize education delivery across the country, citing teacher training as a key factor. She also highlighted initiatives such as textbook provision, breakfast programs, and national training for teachers.
