
Guyana is advancing a new military initiative focused on establishing a “smart, modern, and resilient” defence force. Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan outlined this strategy, emphasizing the military’s dual role in defending national interests against Venezuelan border claims while also supporting the nation’s economic growth.
Amid rising tensions from Venezuela over the historic border dispute, Khan reassured that such threats are more about “political theatre” than an imminent military danger. He expressed confidence that the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is prepared to safeguard national borders within a comprehensive defence strategy known as DIME (Diplomacy, Information, Military, and Economic).
