Years of strategic investment in Guyana’s healthcare sector are now demonstrating significant outcomes, as the government approaches the awarding of new contracts for hospital developments in Region Seven. This effort includes the reconstruction of Bartica Hospital and a substantial $30 million enhancement to the Linden Hospital Complex.
At a recent press conference, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, emphasized that these projects stem from extensive planning and are crucial to fulfilling the government’s vision of a world-class healthcare system. He stated, “These initiatives reflect years of dedication and align with our commitment to provide exceptional healthcare for our citizens.”
Among the various new hospitals announced, the recently commissioned New Diamond Hospital stands out, designed to cater to a population of 40,000. Plans for Bartica Hospital’s reconstruction, alongside upgrades to other facilities, underscore the government’s resolve to overhaul the country’s health infrastructure.
Dr. Jagdeo also highlighted a vigorous recruitment drive for medical professionals, stating efforts are underway to attract specialists from abroad to ensure quality care in hospitals. He underscored that effective hospital management is crucial for enhancing accountability and operational efficiency.
In a bid to diversify healthcare services, public hospitals are now offering advanced medical procedures such as joint replacements and cardiac care. Additionally, the government is fostering private sector growth by eliminating corporate tax and customs duties on medical equipment.
Finally, ethical recruitment practices and investments in local healthcare training are essential for sustaining the sector long-term, as emphasized by Dr. Jagdeo’s vision of a strong, self-sufficient healthcare workforce.
