Iman al-Nouri experienced an unimaginable tragedy when her sons were struck while awaiting assistance. On Thursday, her youngest son, two-year-old Siraj, woke up sobbing from hunger, prompting his cousin, 14-year-old Sama, to take him and his brothers—nine-year-old Omar and five-year-old Amir—to the Altayara health clinic in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza.
After finding the clinic closed, they sat outside when suddenly an air strike occurred. Iman rushed to the site of devastation, where she discovered the lifeless bodies of Amir and Sama. Omar and Siraj were gravely injured, with Omar desperately needing blood, but tragically, he did not survive.
Iman couldn’t comprehend the loss: “Why are they gone? They were just kids with dreams, and they deserved more. If only they could have held on longer,” she lamented, describing Siraj’s critical condition with a severe head injury. Medical professionals informed her that they could not provide the necessary treatment to save him.
Sixteen people lost their lives in this strike, including ten children, as reported by Dr. Mithqal Abutaha from Project Hope, which manages the clinic. The Israeli military stated the attack targeted a “Hamas terrorist,” expressing regret for the collateral damage while Project Hope condemned the incident as a severe violation of international humanitarian law.
Iman highlighted her family’s struggle for basic necessities, revealing that their father risks his life for food while she wonders, “What makes a child scream if they aren’t hungry?”
