US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has raised alarms regarding the “imminent” threat posed by China to Taiwan, urging Asian nations to increase defense expenditures and collaborate with the US to prevent conflict. Addressing a prominent defense summit, Hegseth emphasized that the US does not aim to dominate China but will not tolerate intimidation of its allies.
He characterized China as striving for hegemony in Asia, particularly amid rising tensions over disputed territories in the South China Sea. Citing preparations by China for potential military action against Taiwan, Hegseth noted a timeline of 2027 suggested by US officials as a mark for China’s military readiness. He warned that any attempt by China to exert force over Taiwan would have catastrophic repercussions for the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
While reinforcing that the US seeks no conflict, he reiterated the importance of collective defense, urging increased spending among Asian allies, akin to European nations boosting their military budgets in response to threats. The response from China downplayed Hegseth’s assertions, labeling the US as the main disruptor of regional stability, particularly criticizing its military maneuvers in the area.
As the Shangri-la Dialogue unfolds, the US has brought one of its largest delegations, while China’s representation has notably diminished. Hegseth concluded by stressing that deterrence relies on strong alliances and robust military preparedness.
