New York City has reported a significant decline in crime, marking the lowest levels of shootings and murders since records began. According to city officials, from January 1 to May 31 of this year, there were only 264 shootings and 112 homicides, surpassing previous lows of 267 shootings recorded in 2018 and 113 homicides in both 2014 and 2017.
May witnessed particularly low figures, with just 54 shootings and 18 homicides, compared to the previous record of 61 shootings and 19 homicides in 2019.
Mayor Eric Adams celebrated these results as the fruition of his commitment to public safety, stating, “We have not just kept that promise — we have exceeded it.” He emphasized that these figures represent thousands of lives positively impacted in New York, contributing to safer neighborhoods and thriving communities.
The NYPD has also been proactive in removing illegal firearms from the streets, with approximately 22,000 guns, including dangerous ghost guns, taken off since Adams took office. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch attributed these achievements to a persistent focus on reducing gun violence through targeted strategies and data-driven approaches, indicating a strong commitment to maintaining these gains throughout the summer with a new violence reduction plan.
